PERFORMANCE

What Happens During the Event?

Let’s talk Performance!

In previous articles I’ve talked about the importance of Planning your Fitness Goals such as ‘DEDICATION To Exercise. . . ‘ DEDICATION to Exercise . . . (beehiiv.com), ‘Taking Action Towards Your Goals (2024)’ Taking Action Towards Your Goals (2024) (beehiiv.com), and in ‘The Key To Exercise Mastery’ 'The Key To Exercise Mastery' (beehiiv.com).

Now I want to talk to you specifically about performance itself!

During your execution of a 100m sprint, a barbell squat 1RM, or a 10km run, you’re mindset is vital! The saying goes: ‘Your mind gives out before your body does’, is insanely accurate.

A lot of the time people will actually undergo ‘mental exhaustion’ before their muscles will completely tire out, and although it’s a cliché to say, ‘get your head in the game’, or, ‘get your mind right’ it’s still TRUE.

If you’ve trained correctly and followed through on the fitness plan you’ve set prior to competing or performing, then you should’ve had some pretty hard training sessions to, to prepare you for the conditions of competition.

In a 10km run for example, think, what goes through your head? Is it, ‘did I do enough?’ or is it the opposite: ‘I can do this!’ ‘I’m going to ignore any thoughts that come into my head that will impede my performance’.

In a run, when you’ve trained correctly, you’re used to breathing heavier, your body temperature rising, and your need to drink water going up. All these are normal, and aren’t anything to concern yourselves with.

But, you add an element of competition in their, such as a marathon setting with tens, or hundreds of other people competing - this is when your mind is tested.

The same thing goes for a squat 1RM - You’re used to feeling pressure under the bar as you lift; you’re used to your body temperature increasing; your adrenaline pumping, and the pressure on your legs once you reach the bottom of the movement.

You add an element of someone else competing against you, like in a Strong Man event or a CrossFit competition, then your mind will be tested further.

You must silence those thoughts which will threaten to impede your victory (even the smaller victories, like in training). This will prepare you for further events.
