GAINING STRENGTH WITHOUT INCREASING SIZE
SOME CONSIDERATIONS
Hi everyone!
When we think of strength we automatically go towards the following exercises:
Exercise | Exercise | Exercise |
---|---|---|
Barbell Squat | Barbell Bench Press | Barbell Snatch |
Barbell Deadlift | Barbell Shoulder Press | Barbell Clean |
But there are different ways to display strength, and different ways of how to develop it. Think f the following exercises:
Exercise | Exercise | Exercise |
---|---|---|
Isometric Barbell Squat | Isometric Barbell Bench Press | Oblique Plank |
Plank (forearms) | Stalk Hold | Isometric (Banded) Bicep Curl |

Would you think of someone performing these types of exercises as ‘strong’? May be; but it’s not a common thought. Mainly because there’s so much publicity and media surrounding traditional and Olympic lifts that the latter mentioned exercises get overshadowed. Famous figures like Bruce Lee swear by isometric exercises, because they found the it directly relates to power production in punching and kicking.
Every exercise has it’s use if it’s related to your goals. Bruce Lee wanted to be strong, fast and powerful without gaining much size, because he knew that it would slow his fighting down when versing opponents. So, what’s your reason for building strength?
_____________
You also gain strength through muscular endurance training using higher reps with lower weight and incorporating cardio session around them.
If you want to gain strength and power, without gaining much size, then you probably want to incorporate more isometric-based strength exercises over traditional strength exercises.
It doesn’t mean you cannot use traditional strength exercise, but it does mean you should probably keep them to a minimum. This brings me to a few points which you should consider:
What are my goals?
Do the exercises I’m choosing align with the?
To those points, do I need to incorporate more isometric exercises into my fitness plan?
Does my sleep and recovery align with these goals?
Do the amount of calories and nutrients I’m consuming align with these goals?
I will leave you with these thoughts.
Thanks for reading!
