ENDURANCE:

THE POTENTIAL DEVLEOPMENT OF 'HYBRID' SESSIONS, AND THE MISSING ELEMENTS OF MENTAL TOUGHNESS

Hi everyone!

Endurance is something that I always believed I had. When I was 16 years old, I went swimming twice per week every single week at Glenholme Leisure Centre in Crook. Sadly this leisure centre closed years ago, but I digress.

On the mornings I went swimming, I always used to ask my dad to drop me off at the top green outside the pub in Hunwick, so I could play football with my mates. This went on for weeks!

Football for at least 2 hours after swimming 1000m-1600m twice per week - my endurance, at least my cardiovascular endurance knew no bounds.

However, CrossFit Endurance is something entirely different - although it has elements of cardiovascular endurance, there workouts combine long distance cardiovascular endurance exercises with weighted muscular endurance exercises, and some workouts even go further and add elements of weighted strength exercises in.

A sample of this is below:

Granted, this is probably one of the harder workouts, but it was one of the best examples I could find of combining the earlier mentioned elements into one session.

I believe that over the past four years or so, when CrossFit was at it’s height, gym owners took this concept and based their workouts around it, and called them ‘Hybrid’ sessions, because they found that these types of workouts are effect for weight loss.

They looked at the market, and the obesity stats worldwide and locally, and thought, ‘maybe, if I combine this with good nutrition, this would be the solution to people’s problems’.

And they weren’t far off . . .

However, there is one element that people need to emphasize more, especially outside of the gym when they don’t have a group or a trainer, and that’s the Development of Mental Fortitude and the Awareness needed to silence ‘the Bitch Voice’.

Thanks for reading!
