The sound of rumbling seats and motivational yells across the stadium to instill belief and courage into the men and women who compete for victory.

Nobody knew that for centuries, monsters and gods existed in the form of skin and bone using tools to compete to win over all their hearts.

However, . . . some of us rely to heavy on our audience to fuel our skill set in the moment . . .

Train, Prep, Compete (TPC) - The Art of Competition

Competition and Social Media

Dance, Taekwondo, Football, Netball, Hockey, … All of these things are competitive in nature, and you’d be a fool to think otherwise. As is in life, as is in sports . . .

However, social media seems to have diluted our values through ‘the likes’ and ‘the comments’. You don’t even have to have a reasonable conversation anymore, you can just hit that ‘heart’ emoji on instagram and BOOM! the dopamine hits, even if you haven’t really earned any recognition for doing something great or remotely good.

Originally, we got our dopamine from hard work, labour and exercise, knowing that we have put in the work, or contributed to sculpting our bodies or improving our skill sets, now,… well now it’s just saying some shit on the internet, even if it’s negative!

Through at least a decade now, people have aclimated to a system of likes before the work so there are a lot of people who train that may not put in as much work as this audience, and you may already know some of them. They feel “owed” without doing anything, without contribution. And this skewes their perception of the reality.

This pts a dampner on competitors who rely on motivation for a “fuel source” when participating in an event. Think about that the next time you guys see someone bad mouthing a competitor.

The Prep

When in competition, you could be competing against people who have more endurance, they might be more skilled, they may be willing to work harder than you . . .

Will you let them?

To train properly for anything, whether it be Basketball, Football, Dance, CrossFit, Taekwondo, train with the assumption that the people you are competing against are training harder than you, and never let your guard down to your ‘bitch voice’ - the voice that tells you, ‘it’s okay, you can have a pizza tonight, you worked hard today; . . . you have put up with a lot today, may be you should treat yourself to a takeaway and binge watch Netflix for 3 hours’.

I know because this was me!

Another thing that will help, is chipping away at your goals day by day, investing your time in learning more about the skills you need to compete; exercising at the gym, and practising the skills you need to master to compete or even perform at a high level. And I know it sounds simple in theory, but how many of us, truly, ever actually do this for long periods of time with the determination and consistency required?

So far:

  1. Tell your bitch voice where to go!

  2. Practise, Practise, Practise

And Number 3* Incorperates all!

Your Blueprint:

  1. Write out what you WANT to achieve

  2. Set a Time-Frame (S.M.A.R.T. Principle)

  3. Re-evaluate and ‘pivot’ if necessary

  4. Determine whether ir not you will need support for this

  5. Background research on the competition, and your chosen skill, fitness goal, or event

  6. Draft a plan

  7. Practise, Practise, Practise (Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands - The S.A.I.D. Principle)

  8. Review, and set new goals

  9. Practise, Practise, Practise

  10. Achieve Mastery
